Frequently asked questions

Plain answers about comparing and switching electricity plans in South East Queensland — and how BillCheck works.

What is BillCheck?

BillCheck (by Exactify) is a free tool that compares every electricity plan available in South East Queensland against your actual electricity bill. You upload your bill, it reads your real usage, rates, solar and meter type, and prices every plan by what you specifically would pay — instead of estimating from an average household. It takes no commission from retailers.

How is it different from Energy Made Easy or other comparison sites?

Most comparison sites, including the government's Energy Made Easy, estimate your cost from a household-size usage bucket. BillCheck reads the actual kWh, rates and supply charge printed on your bill, so the saving shown is calculated for your home, not a typical one. It uses the same underlying plan data as Energy Made Easy — the Australian Energy Regulator's Consumer Data Right feed — but applies it to your real numbers.

Is BillCheck really free?

Yes. It's free while we're in beta. It's also commission-free — no retailer pays to be listed or to rank higher, and there's no referral fee when you switch. BillCheck shows the retailer's own contact details and you make the switch yourself.

Do you take commission from electricity retailers?

No. BillCheck accepts no payment from retailers for inclusion, for clicks, or for ranking. Many comparison services only list retailers who pay them a commission, which can quietly shape what you're shown. BillCheck ranks every plan it can retrieve purely by what you would pay.

How accurate is it?

For plans that match your bill's structure, BillCheck prices to the cent — and it self-checks by re-calculating your bill from the rates it read and confirming it reproduces your printed total. Where it can't be exact — demand-charge tariffs, wholesale or spot-price plans, or plans whose time-of-use windows differ from yours — it labels those plans as estimates rather than showing a confident wrong number. As a beta tool, figures are indicative; confirm with the retailer before switching.

If I switch retailers, do I lose my 44c Queensland solar feed-in tariff?

No — the 44c tariff is portable. The Queensland 44c Solar Bonus Scheme feed-in tariff stays with you when you switch retailers, because it's tied to the premises and account holder, not the retailer. It runs until 1 July 2028. You only lose it by moving house, changing the account holder (other than to a spouse), or increasing your inverter capacity.

Many solar households wrongly believe switching forfeits the 44c, so they never shop around and sit on poor usage rates for years. BillCheck holds your feed-in tariff constant across every plan so your comparison is correct. Full guide to the 44c tariff and switching →

What area does BillCheck cover?

South East Queensland — the Energex distribution network — as of 2026. That includes Brisbane, the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast, Ipswich, Logan, Redlands and surrounding areas. It covers electricity only, not gas. Wider Australian coverage may follow if the SE Queensland tool proves out.

What do I need to use it?

A recent electricity bill — a PDF or a photo. If your usage and rates run onto a second page, add both. BillCheck reads the figures it needs; you don't type anything in. An actual-read bill (rather than an estimated read) gives the most accurate result.

Does BillCheck store my bill or sell my data?

Your bill is read to extract the figures and not stored. Identifying details — name, account number, address, NMI — are stripped. De-identified figures are kept to keep improving accuracy. There are no advertising trackers and your data is never sold. See the privacy policy for detail.

Does BillCheck switch me to a new plan?

No. BillCheck shows what you'd pay on each plan and gives you the retailer's own phone number and contact page. You make the switch directly with the retailer. Because BillCheck earns nothing from a switch, it has no stake in which plan you choose.
